In effect: Buprenorphine-naloxone continuation prescribing now within NP scope

Posted Jan. 6, 2016

Prescribing buprenorphine-naloxone (Suboxone) occurs in the context of addiction treatment, a complex area of practice that is emerging internationally for nurse practitioners.

The CRNBC Board on Dec. 2 approved the expansion of NP scope to include continuation prescribing of buprenorphine-naloxone. This change is now in effect.

Standards, limits and conditions on practice

The new standards, limits and conditions (including additional education requirements), D. Opioid Agonist Therapy | Continuation Prescribing of Buprenorphine-Naloxone, have been incorporated into the NP Scope document (pg 33).

The new standard should be used in conjunction with the prescribing standard limits and conditions.
