Public advisory: Unofficial registrant verification sites

posted May 13, 2016

It has come to our attention that a site called www.bclicensing.com is representing itself as a legitimate option to check the status of various regulated health professionals in B.C., including registered nurses and nurse practitioners. This site and others like it present a significant risk to the public.

CRNBC's nurse verification tool is the only legitimate online source for information about the registration status of RNs and NPs in British Columbia. To check the status of an RN or NP, please visit  https://registry.crnbc.ca/. You can search for the nurse or nurse practitioner by name, registration number or nurse type.

As part of our public protection mandate, CRNBC publishes the names and status of all current and past registrants. We do this because it is required under the Health Professions Act and it enables employers and the public to check the status of registrants to ensure they are legally able to practice. Nurses can change their status at any time, and our verification tool always represents the most up-to-date information available.

As the body responsible for registering RNs and NP in the public interest, we are deeply concerned that an employer or a member of the public will use unofficial sources like www.bclicensing.com to verify the registration of a nurse and unknowingly receive inaccurate information about the nurse’s status. We estimate that the information on www.bclicensing.com is currently at least three months out of date. We strongly urge employers and the public to avoid using this site, and others that may exist currently or in the future.

What we’re doing

Our options for addressing this situation are limited, as the information being posted on www.bclicensing.com is information we are required to make available to the public. However, we have put technical solutions in place to limit the ease and ability of operators of these sites to collect our registrant information in large quantities, and we are working to further enhance these solutions.

Need to check the registration of an RN or NP?

Go to CRNBC’s official nurse verification tool and search for the nurse or nurse practitioner by name, registration number or nurse type.
